Anyone who does not comply with a Tree Preservation order by damaging or carrying out work on a protected tree without permission from the local planning authority is guilty of a criminal offence and may be fined. The maximum fine is £20,000. In serious cases the case may be dealt with by the Crown Court, where an unlimited fine can be imposed.
